The app has a very simple user interface which makes it a joy to use. When you open a photo, it will transform into a cartoon drawing.

The app has 14 different sketch styles under the Stylize tab. Simply swipe across and tap on the style you want to use.

Below you can see the original iPhone photo on the left. The middle image has the Realistic Sepia effect applied. And the right image has the Cartoon style effect.

The Foap app brings your photos to the attention of potential buyers from all over the world.

If you have the kind of images they need, you’ll be in with a chance of making a sale!

The Foap app also has a photography community that you can get involved in. You can explore photos from other Foap members and get feedback on your own pictures.

2. How Does Foap Work?

The Foap app lets you upload photos straight from your iPhone.

Once uploaded, your images are available for sale. You can sell the same photo as many times as you like.

Buyers can search for images and purchase them through the Foap Market at Foap.com.

Another way to sell your photos is through Foap missions. These are photo challenges organized by famous brands, such as Pepsi, MasterCard, Nivea, Volvo, MasterCard, and Bank of America.

5. How To Use The Foap App To Sell Your Photos

The Foap app is very easy to use.

When you first download the app, you’ll need to create a Foap account. After that, you can upload photos, explore current missions, and discover other people’s photos.

5.1 Navigate Around The Foap App

There are five icons at the bottom of the screen which let you navigate around the app.

The Newsfeed icon takes you to the News section of Foap. Here, you’ll find the latest information on current missions and recent winners.

If you’re following other Foap users, tap Following at the top of the screen to quickly access their profile. The Me tab shows how other users have rated your photos.

The Explore icon lets you view other Foap members’ photos.

Tap the Sold tab at the top of the screen to see which photos have sold. Tap Recent to view recently uploaded pictures. Use the Search box to search for a particular genre of photography.

The Camera icon lets you upload your photos to the Foap app.

The Missions icon shows details of the latest missions organized by famous brands.

The Active tab lists all current mission briefs. The Joined tab shows any missions you’ve joined. The Winners tab displays the winning shots from previous missions.

The Menu icon takes you to the settings and options for your Foap account. Here, you can manage your photos, change notification settings, and withdraw money from sales.

5.2 Upload Your Photos To Foap

To add your images to the Foap marketplace, you’ll need to upload some photos to your profile.

Tap the Camera icon at the bottom of the screen.

Find the photo you want to upload, then tap to select it. To save time, you can select several photos to batch upload them. Tap Done to start the upload process.

Next, add an accurate description and as many relevant tags as possible. Tags are keywords that help your photos appear when buyers search for those words.

Select from the suggested tags beneath your photo. Or tap Add Tags to type your own tags, then click OK.

Tap Publish at the top right.

Next, you have to answer some questions about whether there are people in your photo. Answer Yes or No.

If you answer Yes, you’ll be asked if the faces are recognizable. If you can’t recognize any faces in your photo, tap No. You can then tap Publish to complete the upload.

If there are recognizable faces in your photo, you’ll need to complete a model release form. The model must sign the form. For children under 18, a parent or guardian needs to sign.

Click here to print off the model release form. Once completed and signed, take a photo of the form and click here to upload it to Foap.

Remember, if you don’t have the model’s permission, you can’t sell your photo on Foap.

When you publish a photo, it appears in the list of your published images. To exit this screen, tap the arrow at the top left.

To view your uploaded photos, you’ll need to go to your Foap profile page. Tap the Menu icon, then tap your Foap profile name at the top of the screen. Tap on a photo to view it full screen.

5.3 Join A Foap Mission

How do you increase your chances of earning more money with Foap?

The best way is to join some missions.

Missions are set up by big brands. They specify exactly what they’re looking for and how much they’ll pay. Some offer as much as $500 for a winning submission.

The mission runs for a set number of days. The brand then chooses its favorite photo and pays the reward. They might also buy other photos submitted to the mission.

Joining a mission puts your photos right in front of famous brands. This increases your chances of making some big sales.

To browse the current missions, tap Missions at the bottom of the screen.

Tap on a mission to read the details. To exit the mission brief, tap the arrow at the top left.

You may already have photos that fit the mission brief. Or you might need to take photos specifically for the mission.

To increase your chances of a sale, pay attention to what the brand wants.

Some missions require a particular product in the shot. There might be a certain age range or clothing requirements. They might want photos to have minimal editing. Or maybe they need images in a particular format, such as square.

It’s also a good idea to keep an eye on the competition. Tap Photos near the top of the screen to see what other people have submitted. Tap the arrow at the top left to return to the mission brief.

To submit your photos to a mission, tap Join Mission at the bottom of the screen.

Select your photos, then tap Done. Add a description and tags, then tap Publish.

Try to submit several photos to a mission to increase your chance of success.

But try to keep your edits subtle. Most buyers are looking for images without heavy editing effects.

Tip 3: Add Accurate Descriptions & Tags

When you upload your photos to Foap, take the time to add accurate descriptions and tags.

Good descriptions and tags help your photos to appear in searches made by buyers. Think about what the buyer might be searching for to find a photo like yours.

You’ll need to add a minimum of five tags to your photo, but try to use a lot more.

When creating tags, be both specific and more general. For example, a photo of a red rose could have the following tags: rose, red, flower, petals, nature, floral, garden, florist, valentines day, romance, love.

Take part in photo missions organized by famous brands.

This does make using Foap more time-consuming. But it increases your chances of getting your photos noticed.

And the payment rewards are much higher than selling photos through the Foap marketplace.

Another top tip is to get an idea of what kind of photos sell well on Foap.

Use the Explore icon at the bottom of the screen to view recently sold photos.

1. Get The Horizon Straight For Professional Landscape Photos

Getting your horizon straight can be hard, and it can seem unnecessary.

Yet you’ve got to do it. You must get your horizon straight.

Why is this so important?

Here’s the painful truth: Nothing shouts ‘amateur photographer’ more than a slanted horizon in a landscape photo.

Fortunately, there are two simple ways to ensure that you never get a slanted horizon again.

The first way uses the iPhone camera grid.

First, tap Settings, then Camera. Make sure that Grid is selected.

Now go back to the Camera app and look at your iPhone. You should see gridlines running across the screen.

So here’s the technique: Simply align your horizon using the gridlines. It’s that easy. That’s how I aligned the horizon in the screenshot below.

But what if you’ve already taken slanted images? Is there a way to rescue these photos?

There is. Simply open the photo in the Photos app. Tap Edit.

Then select the Rotate tool. Hold your finger on the number scale that appears below your image. Move left or right to adjust the angle of the photo.

Once the photo has a straight horizon, simply release your finger from the screen. Then tap Done.

If you use these techniques, you’ll never have a crooked photo again.

2. Avoid Bright Sunlight For Beautiful Landscape Photography

How’s the light in your landscape photography?

Because bad lighting can ruin your landscape photos.

You might be in the most stunning location imaginable. But if the lighting is poor, your photos will be flat and lifeless.

What counts as poor lighting? There’s one form of lighting that you should avoid like the plague: bright sunlight. That is, you should avoid the type of light you find at noon on a sunny day.

Bright sunlight is terrible for landscape photography. It comes with a whole host of issues, such as:

• Lens flare
• Strong shadows
• Overexposed whites
• Blurry images

So don’t shoot during bright sunlight.

Instead, shoot just after sunrise and just before sunset.

The light will be soft and golden. And your pictures will look amazing. Notice the light in the photo below: perfect and warm!

3. Capture Impressive Skies For Compelling Photographs

Do you want to do dramatic landscape photography? Do you want landscape photos that draw the viewer in?

Then pay attention to the sky.

Landscape photography isn’t just about getting great shots of the land. Clouds, sunsets, and weather all play a huge role in the overall strength of a landscape photo.

Therefore, keep an eye on the weather forecast.

For instance, do you want dramatic, moody images? Then shoot when the sky is stormy (this works really well if you’re doing rural landscape photography).

If you’re looking for something more cheerful, shoot on days with white, fluffy clouds. That’s how I got the shot below.

Time of day is another important consideration.

If you shoot at midday, skies tend to be boring and lifeless. At sunrise and sunset, however, skies come alive. Clouds turn pink and orange. This is a landscape photographer’s dream.

How do you get the best results? Capture impressive skies.

4. Create A Sense Of Depth For Dynamic Images

Do you often feel like your landscape photos are flat and boring? You’re not alone. As a landscape photographer, you have to work to get powerful images.

Do you want to know an easy technique for creating powerful, dynamic images? Here it is: Create a sense of depth in your photos.

That is, lead the viewer’s eye from foreground to background. Make the landscape feel spacious.

How do you do this?

First, use leading lines. Leading lines are lines that draw the eye into a photograph. Incorporating leading lines into your photos is a great way to add depth.

In landscape photography, the best leading lines tend to be paths, rivers, fences, and roads. I used a river as a leading line for the photo above. However, anything can work as a leading line!

Second, include objects in the foreground of your image. Once you’ve found a beautiful landscape, don’t start shooting. Search out objects nearby—objects that you can put in the foreground of your photo.

The feather in the photo above is a great foreground object. It adds depth to the image.

For the greatest effect, get down low to the ground and get near the object. This will make the object loom large in your photos.

Then, when you finally take the shot, you’ll come away with a dramatic, three-dimensional image.

Remember: If you want dynamic images, keep an eye out for leading lines. And don’t forget to look for foreground objects.

5. Include A Focal Point For Eye-Catching Photos

Landscape images need focal points.

A focal point is the main element of interest in a scene. It’s what captures the viewer’s attention.

Without a focal point, your landscape images will feel empty.

Therefore, make sure you have one.

People make great focal points in landscape photos. If you include people in your photos, the eye will be drawn to them. And they’ll give your images a sense of completeness.

For instance, consider the photo below. Without people, it’s a nice shot. But people add a sense of completeness to the photo. People make it far more powerful.

If you want eye-catching images, you must use focal points. They’ll draw the viewer right in.

6. Use The Rule Of Thirds To Create Beautiful Compositions

Composition refers to the way elements are arranged in a photograph.

And if you want beautiful landscape photos, you must create beautiful landscape compositions.

How do you do this? What compositions are beautiful?

One technique for better compositions is the rule of thirds. The rule states that the best compositions have elements a third of the way into the frame.

In other words, you should place the most important parts of your photographs along this grid:

For instance, it’s a good idea to place horizons along the top and bottom gridlines. And if you have a subject in the foreground, try to place it at one of the lower two junction points (the places where the gridlines cross).

Notice how the horizon is aligned perfectly with the top gridline.

On your iPhone’s Home screen, tap Settings. Tap Camera. Then select Grid.

When you go back to your camera screen, you’ll be able to see the rule of thirds grid. And you’ll be able to use it to create awesome compositions—every time you take a photo.

7. Keep Your Compositions Simple For Powerful Photographs

What’s one thing you can do to instantly improve your landscape photography?

Simplify your compositions.

Too many elements in a composition result in clutter. They result in chaos, and the viewer doesn’t know where to look.

In general, a complex image is hard to pull off.

Instead, you need to give your subjects some breathing room. Don’t try to include three main subjects. Look for scenes with only one or two elements, and focus on capturing these.

For example, lonely trees make great landscape subjects. You can use lonely trees to create compelling, simple images. That’s what I did for the photo below.

You can also simplify by including negative space in your photos. Negative space is the part of a photo where nothing is really going on. There’s nothing to focus on, and that’s okay.

A common form of negative space is empty sky. It doesn’t draw the eye. Instead, it helps the viewer to focus on the main subject. For example, the sky in the photo below helps the viewer to focus on the main subject: the trees.

One last way to simplify your photography is to cut down on color. That is, make sure you only have a few colors in your scene. Too much color makes for a chaotic image.

The photo below has a simple, earthy color palette. The colors don’t overwhelm the eye. Instead, they add a sense of peacefulness to the image.

Remember, when it comes to landscape photography, less is more.

8. Take A Panorama For A Breathtaking Landscape Photo

Do you want to create a truly breathtaking landscape photo? Do you want your photo to capture the vastness and grandeur of the scene?

If so, then you should take a panorama.

Panoramas are extremely wide photographs. They’re made by stitching together several normal photographs. The photo above is a panorama.

In fact, you can take a panorama photo using only your iPhone.

Open the Camera app and swipe to find the Pano shooting mode. You’ll see directions on the screen, indicating how to move your iPhone while taking a panorama.

Press the shutter button. Then follow the directions, slowly panning your iPhone across the scene.

1. Superimpose X Tools & Interface

If you’re new to Superimpose X, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the app’s layout and icons before you start editing. In this section, you’ll explore the user interface and tools of the Superimpose X app.

Note that Superimpose X is the new and improved version of the popular Superimpose app. Both versions of the app are currently available in the App Store.

This tutorial covers how to use the newer Superimpose X app. You can download Superimpose X from the App Store for $4.99.

1.1 Open An Image In Superimpose X

When you open the Superimpose X app, you’ll see five icons at the top of the screen: Photos, Mask Lib, Colors, Paste and Sessions.

Each of these icons opens up a different tab where you can select an image to work on. Below is a short description of each icon.

The Photos tab displays your iPhone photo library. These are the images stored in your iPhone’s built-in Photos app. Select an album from the bottom of the screen, and tap an image to open it.

The Mask Lib (mask library) is where your saved masks get stored. When you cut out part of an image, you can save it as a mask. You can then add that mask to another photo at any time. When you learn how to save masks in section 2 of this tutorial, you’ll see them in your mask library.

The Colors tab lets you create your own colored backgrounds. Choose a single color, or combine two colors blended with a gradient. You can then add one or more images onto the colored background.

The Paste tab is where you’ll find an image that you’ve copied from another app on your iPhone. For example, you could copy an image from an email, document or webpage. To copy a photo, tap and hold on it for a couple of seconds, then select Copy.

The Sessions tab stores any projects that you’ve previously worked on in Superimpose. As you create new projects during this tutorial, you’ll see them appear here.

When you select an image to open, you have the option to crop the photo. If you wish to crop, drag the corner handles to remove the edges of the picture. Tap Constraints if you want to crop to a specific aspect ratio. Finally, tap Choose to open the image.

1.2 Navigate The Superimpose X Screen

When your image opens, the following screen will appear.

You’ll learn how to use many of these tools in this tutorial. Below is a brief description of each one.

The Menu icon (three horizontal lines) lets you access video tutorials and app settings.

The Share icon (rectangle with up arrow) allows you to save and share your creations.

The Library icon (four squares) takes you back to your photo library. From here you can also access the mask library, colors, sessions, etc.

The Layers icon (three stacked squares) lets you view the individual layers in your composite image. You’ll learn how to use Superimpose layers in section 3 of this tutorial.

The View icon (two stacked squares) lets you toggle between viewing the current layer or the blended image.

At the bottom of the screen are five icons: Layers, Transform, Mask, Filter and Editor. Each icon opens a tab containing different tools.

The Layers tab lets you add more images to your project. Each image appears on a new layer, and each layer can be edited individually. The Transform tab provides tools for resizing, rotating and blending layers.

The Mask tab lets you erase parts of an image using a range of masking tools. You can then combine the remaining area with a different photo to make a composite image.

The Filter and Editor tabs contain photo editing tools for enhancing your image. Tools include color and exposure adjustments, preset filters, and creative effects.

You should now be familiar with the layout of the Superimpose X app. Next, you’ll learn how to use the mask tools to erase parts of an image.

2. Use Mask Tools To Erase Parts Of An Image

In this section, you’ll learn how to use the Superimpose mask tools. These tools let you “cut out” your subject by erasing the areas you don’t want.

Once you’ve made your cutout, you can save it to the mask library. You can then add that mask/cutout onto another image at any time.

2.1 Open The Mask Tools

Start by opening the photo you want to cut out. If you’re currently in the Superimpose editing screen, tap the Library icon (four squares) at the top of the screen.

Select the image you want to use from your photo library. Crop it if you wish, then tap Choose.

When you’ve opened the photo, tap Mask at the bottom of the screen. The mask options appear in the black bar beneath your image. Tap Mask Tool to open a pop-up list of 16 different mask tools.

These mask tools let you erase parts of the image you don’t want. Each mask tool works in a slightly different way. Your choice of tool will depend on what you want to erase.

The “magic” or “smart” mask tools (marked with tiny star icons) let you remove large sections with a single tap. The Magic Wand and Smart Brush are good tools to start with. These automated mask tools speed up the task of erasing large areas.

The standard Brush and Lasso tools let you select areas manually. The Brush tool is great for fine-tuning your selection and working on small, detailed areas.

The Gradient mask tool allows for seamless blending of images. There are tools that let you cut out shapes and text. And there’s even a tool to help you cut around hair.

Once you’ve selected a mask tool, you can tap Settings to customize the tool. For example, you can change the brush size, smoothness and feathering.

Read on to learn how to use some of the most popular mask tools to erase parts of your image.

2.2 Use The Magic Wand To Remove Large Areas Of Color

The Magic Wand mask tool is perfect for quickly erasing large blocks of a single color. Use it to select areas of sky, grass, sand, water, etc.

Ensure the Mask tab is active at the bottom of the screen, then tap Mask Tool. Select the Magic Wand tool from the pop-up list.

Now tap once on the area you want to remove. All adjoining areas of similar color will be erased. A gray and white checkerboard indicates the transparent areas of your image, i.e. the areas that have been erased.

If you erase too much of your image, tap the back arrow beneath your photo to undo. Then tap Settings, and move the Threshold slider left a bit. This changes the sensitivity of the tool, so that only very similar colors to the one you tap are erased.

Now tap the area you want to remove again. You may have to undo and adjust the Threshold setting a few times to get the selection right.

Don’t worry if the selection isn’t perfect. You can tidy it up later using the manual Brush tool.

2.3 Use The Smart Brush For Accurate Edge Selection

The Smart Brush mask tool works like a normal brush tool, i.e. you brush over the image with your finger. But its “smart” feature automatically identifies edges that you brush over. It’s great for making accurate selections around the edges of a subject.

Tap Mask Tool, then select the Smart Brush tool.

Pinch to zoom in on the area you want to erase. Use two fingers to drag the image to the correct position if necessary.

Use your finger to brush over the areas you want to erase. Take your time to carefully work your way around the outline of the area you want to keep.

Work on small areas at a time. Doing this means you’ll only need to undo a small section of your work if the area removed isn’t quite right.

If necessary, open the Settings at the bottom of the screen, and adjust the brush size and strength. You’ll want to set these lower when working on small, detailed areas of your image.

The default setting for showing erased areas is the gray and white checkerboard. But you may find it easier to see what you’re erasing if you change this to a color. To do this, tap the View icon (two stacked squares) at the top of the screen. Then tap the Eye icon to toggle through the different colors.

2.4 Use The Brush For Precise Detail

The Brush is a fully manual mask tool. It doesn’t make automatic selections based on color or edges. You use this tool entirely freehand, and any areas you brush over will be erased.

The Brush is useful for fine-tuning your masked area. You can erase or restore any mistakes that you made using other mask tools.

Tap Mask Tool, then select the Brush tool.

Zoom in on the area you want to work on. If necessary, tap Settings, then adjust the brush size and smoothness. There’s also the option to select a normal brush or feathered brush. The feathered brush creates softer edges around your selection.

Use your finger to carefully brush over the areas you want to erase. The area you’re working on will also appear in the corner of the screen. This makes it easier to see what you’re doing when working on small sections of your image.

Ensure you work in small sections as it’s quite easy to make errors. If you go wrong and erase part of the image that you want to keep, you have two options.

You can use the back arrow to undo. Or you can switch to Restore mode (as opposed to Erase mode). Restore mode lets you brush over erased areas to bring them back.

To restore part of your photo, tap the square icon at the bottom right of your image (above the Mask Tool). When you see the word Restore beneath the icon, brush over an erased area to bring it back.

To return to Erase mode, tap the square icon at the bottom right. When you see the word Erase beneath the icon, brush over the image to erase.

2.5 Tips For Using Mask Tools

The more accurate you are when using the mask tools, the better your final composite image will look. Take your time to make precise, accurate selections using the most appropriate mask tools for the job.

Use the mask settings to customize the tool you’re using. For example, change the brush size to suit the size of the area you want to erase. Or adjust the edges of the mask to make them hard, smooth or feathered.

For best results, you’ll usually need to use a combination of automated and manual mask tools.

If you make a mistake when using the mask tools, tap the back arrow beneath the photo to undo. Tap the forward arrow to redo.

To restore an area that you erased by mistake, switch to Restore mode. Then use a mask tool to select the areas you want to bring back. Switch back to Erase mode to carry on erasing.

2.6 Save Your Cutout To The Mask Library

When you’ve finished erasing parts of your image, you can save your cutout to the mask library. Masks that you save can be inserted onto other images at any point in the future.

So if you think you’ll want to use your cutout image in multiple projects, ensure you save it to the mask library. This will save you a lot of time, as you only have to mask the image once.

To save your mask, tap the Share icon (rectangle with arrow) at the top of the screen. Select Current Layer Image, then tap Mask Lib to add your cutout to the mask library.

For future projects, you’ll be able to open images from your mask library, as well as your photo library. To view images in your mask library, tap the Library icon (four squares) at the top middle of the screen, then tap Mask Lib.

You now know how to cut out part of an image with the mask tools, and save the cutout to your mask library. In the next sections, you’ll learn how to use masks and layers in Superimpose X to combine images together.

You’ll learn how to cut out a subject from one picture, and place them onto another background photo. And you’ll discover how to blend two photos together to create stunning double-exposures.

3. Replace The Background Using Masks & Layers

With the Superimpose app, you can easily replace the background in a photo. In this section, you’ll learn how to add a subject from one image onto the background of another photo.

You can use this technique to change the sky in a photo. Replace a dull gray sky with a beautiful blue sky from a different photo.

It’s also great for adding a person into an empty scene. A person creates a strong focal point, gives a sense of scale to your photo, and adds a storytelling element.

The example below shows how I moved the girl from the beach photo onto a different background image.

I used the mask tools to erase the background in the beach photo. I then added the girl onto a new layer in the tree photo.

Follow the step-by-step instructions below to learn how to change the background in your own iPhone photos.

3.1 Open Your Background Image

Start by opening the photo you want to use as the background. If you’re currently in the Superimpose editing screen, tap the Library icon (four squares), and ensure Photos is active.

Select the photo you want to use. Crop the image if you wish, then tap Choose.

3.2 Add Your Second Image On A New Layer

You’ll now add your second photo on top of the background image. Ensure the Layers tab is active at the bottom of the screen. Tap Add Layer at the bottom right of the photo, then tap Photo Layer.

You now have two options. You can open an image from your photo library, and then use the mask tools to erase the parts you don’t want. Or you can open a saved mask from the mask library. Remember, a mask is an image that you’ve already cut out and saved.

Select your preferred option – either Photos or Mask Lib – and open the image you want to add onto the background. The second photo will appear on top of the background image.

If you need to move or resize the top image, tap Transform at the bottom of the screen. To resize, drag the corners of the photo. Or tap Fit To Base to make it the same size as the background image. To move the image, tap and drag.

To see the individual layers in your project, tap the Layers icon (three stacked squares) at the top right. The layer thumbnails appear on the right of the screen.

When working with layers, ensure the layer you want to work on is active in the layers palette on the right. If you want to erase parts of the top layer so the bottom image shows through, ensure the top layer is active.

3.3 Erase Areas Using Mask Tools

If you added an entire photo as the top layer, rather than a saved mask, you’ll need to erase the parts of the image you don’t want. This allows the background image on the bottom layer to show through.

Ensure the top layer is active, then tap the Mask tab. Select the Mask Tool you want to use. Erase the parts of the layer that you want to remove.

When masking the layer, you can choose to see only that layer, or all layers to give you a preview of the final blended image. To toggle between these two views, tap the View icon (two stacked squares) at the top of the screen.

When you’ve masked the layer, you can save the cutout to your mask library. This allows you to use that cutout in another project in the future. Ensure the masked layer is active, then tap the Share icon (rectangle with arrow) at the top of the screen. Select Current Layer Image, then tap Mask Lib.

Below is the final blended image that I created. The horse was cut out of the bluebell wood, and given a new coastal view as the background.

Here’s another picture where the horse has been moved to a foggy wood. Saving the horse cutout to the mask library allowed me to easily add it to lots of different background photos.

Of course, you’re not limited to combining two photos. If you want to add another image or mask to your project, open the Layer tab, and tap Add Layer. Tap Photo Layer, then select the image or mask you want to add. You can repeat this to add even more images to your project.

3.4 Add A Shadow

When you add a cutout subject onto a new background photo, sometimes it can look a bit flat. The Shadow tool can help the final image look more realistic and three-dimensional.

To add a shadow to the top layer of your image, tap the Layers tab, then tap Cast Shadow. A shadow will appear around the subject. Use the Opacity slider to make the shadow lighter or darker.

To adjust the softness of the shadow edges, tap Blur Amount at the bottom of the screen, then adjust the slider. To the right of the sliders, you can select a color for your shadow. Use a black shadow for a realistic finish.

Finally, you can move the position of the shadow by dragging your finger across the screen.

4. Save Your Blended Image

When you’ve finished blending your images, don’t forget to save your creation to your iPhone’s photo library.

Tap the Share icon (rectangle with arrow) at the top of the screen. Select Blended Image, then tap Save.

The image will be saved to the built-in Photos app on your iPhone.

5. Create A Double-Exposure Image

Double-exposure is a creative technique that blends two images together in an artistic way.

I created this double-exposure photo from two images: a wheat field and a portrait of a girl.

Creating a double-exposure image in the Superimpose app involves using layers, masks and blending modes. Read on to learn how to use Superimpose to create your own amazing double-exposures.

5.1 Open Your Two Images

Start by deciding which two photos you want to combine. Double-exposures can add a new dimension to the story-telling ability of your images. So think carefully about what you want to achieve, and choose two photos that will work well together.

Open the first image from your photo library. If you’re currently in the Superimpose editing screen, tap the Library icon (four squares). Ensure Photos is active, then select the photo you want to use. Crop the image if you wish, then tap Choose.

To add your second photo, ensure the Layers tab is active at the bottom of the screen. Tap Add Layer, then tap Photo Layer.

Open the second image from your photo library or mask library. Remember, the mask library contains images that you’ve already cut out and saved for future use. In the example below, I chose a photo of a girl that I’d already cut out and saved to my mask library.

When you open the second photo, it appears on top of the background image. Move or resize the top layer using the Transform option at the bottom of the screen.

5.2 Blend The Layers

Now you can blend the two images to create a double-exposure effect. Ensure the Transform tab is active, then tap Blend.

Scroll across to see the 17 different blend modes. Tap each blend mode to see how they blend the layers together in different ways. Use the Opacity slider to adjust the transparency of the top layer until you’re happy with the result.

5.3 Use Mask Tools To Erase

If necessary, you can use the mask tools to erase parts of the top image. This can help the two images to blend more smoothly. Tap the Mask tab at the bottom of the screen, then tap Mask Tool. Select the Brush mask tool from the pop-up box.

Tap Settings beneath the photo, and select the Feathered Brush. Adjust the Brush Size to suit the size of the area you want to erase.

Use your finger to brush over parts of the top layer that you want to erase. This will reveal more of the background image in these areas. In the example below, I erased part of the girl’s shoulder on the top layer. This revealed the girl standing on the beach in the bottom layer.

5.4 Match The Colors Of Your Images

The Match Color tool improves the blending process by matching the colors of both images.

Ensure the Layers tab is active at the bottom left of the screen. Then tap the Layers icon (three stacked squares) at the top right.

In the layers palette on the right, tap the layer you want to change the color of, e.g. the top layer. Select Match Color from the menu that appears.

A message will appear asking what you want to match the color to. Tap on the other layer, e.g. the bottom layer, to harmonize the color in the two images.

The screenshots below show how the color of the top layer (the large image of the girl) has changed. The colors appear warmer (more orange) to match the warm color tone of the beach photo.

When you’re happy with your double-exposure image, remember to save it. Tap the Share icon (rectangle with arrow) at the top of the screen. Select Blended Image, then tap Save.

The double-exposure image will save to the built-in Photos app on your iPhone.

6. Enhance Your Image With Filters & Editing Tools

In addition to masks and layers, Superimpose X has a wide range of iPhone filters and editing tools. You can use these to enhance your image and add some finishing touches to your creation.

6.1 Open The Filter & Editor Tools

Tap on the Filter and Editor tabs at the bottom of the screen to see the available tools.

There are one-tap filter effects, as well as color, exposure and clarity tools. You can blur and distort your photos, add gradients and vignettes, and type onto your images.

There’s also a selection of brush tools. These let you paint, smudge or add preset overlays to your photos.

6.2 Use The Brush To Paint Overlays Onto Your Image

The Brush tool in the Editor tab has a selection of overlays that you can “paint” onto your image. Use it to add birds, trees, hearts, stars, and more to your creation.

Open the Editor tab at the bottom of the screen, then tap Brush. Select Effect, then swipe across the row of preset brush shapes and tap the one you want to use.

Tap Settings at the bottom of the screen to adjust the size and color of the overlay. You can access more settings by tapping the icon with three sliders to the left of the Brush Size slider.

Use your finger to add the overlay to your image. Tap once on the screen to add a single overlay. Or drag your finger to scatter the overlay across a large area. Tap the checkmark at the top left to apply the overlay to your image.

7. Manage Your Stored Sessions & Masks

Each time you start a new project in Superimpose, the previous project automatically saves into the Sessions library.

To go back to a previous project, tap the Library icon (four squares) at the top of the editor screen. Tap Sessions, then tap on the project you want to open.

In the Sessions library, you’ll see the amount of storage space used by each project. The total amount of project storage space appears at the bottom of the screen.

To ensure you don’t fill up your iPhone’s storage capacity, delete any projects that you no longer want.

To delete projects from the Sessions library, tap Select at the bottom of the screen. Select the projects you want to delete, then tap the Delete icon at the bottom left.

You can manage your mask library in the same way. Tap Mask Lib at the top of the screen, then tap Select. Tap the masks you want to delete, then tap the Delete icon.

Types Of Lenses

Let’s look at the types of lenses available for your iPhone, and what they’re suitable for:

Wide-angle iPhone Camera Lens: Wide angle lenses help you get more in your photo than the standard iPhone camera lens. This makes them great for landscape shots, and a good substitute for using the built-in iPhone panorama mode.

Telephoto iPhone Camera Lens: This type of lens brings your subject closer to you. The larger the magnification number, the bigger the distant object will appear in your photo. Telephoto lenses also create far more flattering portrait photos, as the facial features will look more natural.

Fisheye iPhone Camera Lens: Fisheye lenses create dramatic spherical images, with darkened corners and distorted lines.  The distortion in these images is part of their appeal. These lenses are great for really creative shots, but you’ll need to get in close to your subject.

Macro iPhone Camera Lens: These lenses help you capture subjects not normally visible to the naked eye. You’ll need to get up close to your subject and hold your iPhone very still to get detailed, in-focus images. Use this kind of lens for shooting incredible iPhone macro photos of insects and flowers.

Next, let’s look at some specific brands.

1. Olloclip

Olloclip is one of the best-known iPhone camera lens brands. They offer a range of lens kits aimed at different kinds of photographer. The lens kits are available for iPhone 4 onwards, although their iPhone X camera products are still in development.

Each lens kit offers different lens options:

• The Core Lens Set comes with 180 degree fisheye, super-wide and 15x macro lenses.
• The Vista Lens Set has the super-wide and 2x telephoto lenses.
• The Active Lens Set includes the ultra-wide and 2x telephoto lenses.
• The Macro Lens Set has 7x, 14x and 21x macro lenses.

iPhone 7 / 7 Plus and iPhone 8 / 8 Plus users will find the Core Lens Set on sale for around $100, the Vista Lens Set for about $119, the Active Lens Set for $119 and the Macro Lens Set for $80.00

Users of iPhone 6 / 6s / 6s Plus and earlier model users should consider purchasing the 4-in-1 Lens Kit, available for $80.

A new lens attachment kit has been introduced for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 camera. The Connect system, pictured below, allows you to easily add to your lens collection with the interchangeable setup and is also selfie-ready making use of the iPhone’s front-facing camera.

There are other kits available tailored to your preferred photography style. You can choose a macro kit if you’re a fan of close-up photography. Or go for a kit including telephoto and wide-angle lenses if you enjoy landscape photography.

The pendant storage system supplied lets you keep the lenses handy for use. It also serves as a steadying tripod for those macro shots. Olloclip also gets the Apple seal of approval as you can buy them directly from Apple, but you can also find them on Amazon.com.

2. Moment

Moment lenses are renowned for their image quality, which explains why they’re considerably more expensive than the competition.

Lenses are available for the iPhone X as well as for older iPhone models, right back to the iPhone 4.

Your best option for mounting the lens to your iPhone is to purchase a custom case that the individual lenses attach to. The stylish cases will cost you between $24 and a whopping $99 for a case with a built-in battery. There is a cheaper option with a lens mounting plate. This will set you back a mere $5 though it is a permanent fixture as attached with adhesive.

All lenses and accessories can be purchased directly from Moment, who also offer a trade-in service. Send in your old Moment lens and get a $25 voucher towards a new one.

3. Oowa

Oowa take a unique approach to the design of their mobile lenses. Their oval asymmetrical design results in a clearer image with less distortion than seen from some other competitors. The lenses are claimed to be the highest quality mobile lenses on the market and comparison tests support this claim.

If you’re an avid user of Instagram you’ll get to see what regular people produce using these lenses. The company has an active team of users showing off the lenses at their best. Check out the #MadeWithOOWA hashtag to see for yourself.

The iPhone camera lens range on offer is limited to a 2.5x telephoto lens and a wide-angle lens. Unfortuantely, Oowa don’t supply a macro lens. So, if you’re interested in taking close up shots, then consider a different lens system. You’ll also need the Oowa phone case to connect the lens to your phone.

Get the whole set by choosing the Pro Kit which is currently available for $109. You can also purchase the individual lenses for $69 each. You’ll get two phone cases, lens caps and a carrying case included with your individual lens purchase.

The lenses are available for iPhone 6 and above but not yet available for the iPhone X. Also note that if you have an iPhone 7, the telephoto lens is only compatible with the 1x phone camera.

The lenses attach via model-specific iPhone case costing just $15. Next time you upgrade your iPhone, you just need to purchase the corresponding case.

4. SANDMARC

SANDMARC are best known for their GoPro and DJI camera accessories. But they’ve been creating lenses for iPhones for several years and are fast becoming a household name. Based in California, their focus is on action photography, but they offer a range of iPhone lenses for landscape and macro photography too.

Their current product lineup caters only for the iPhone X and includes the following lenses:

Wide Angle Lens

With its 16mm focal length, the wide-angle lens lets you capture much more of the scene than the native 28mm iPhone lens.

It’s a large lens and weighs in at 71 grams (2.5 ounces), and its weight does make the iPhone feel a little unbalanced in the hand. It’s not a big problem, but it can make holding the iPhone in one hand a little challenging.

In terms of image quality, it’s very impressive. There’s very little image distortion and minimal softness in the corners or along the edges. It’s the perfect lens for landscape photography, or social events where you want to capture more of the available scene.

Wide Lens Edition – $89.99

Fisheye Lens

This 10mm fisheye lens lets you capture even more of the scene than either the SANDMARC Wide Edition Lens above, or the native 28mm iPhone lens.

The lens is fairly bulky and weighs 55 grams (just under 2 ounces). However, it’s a little smaller than the SANDMARC Wide Edition Lens, so not too large or obtrusive.

As with all fisheye lenses, there’s a significant amount of lens distortion, but this is part of the appeal of a fisheye lens, so don’t let this put you off.

The image quality is very good, but in the corners and, to a lesser extent, the edges of the frame, you’ll get some softening of the image. Therefore, it’s important to keep your primary subject near to the center of the frame.

Fisheye Lens Edition – $79.99

Macro Lens

The macro lens is very bulky, but this is mainly due to the removable plastic hood supplied with the lens. The actual macro lens itself is relatively small, and can be used without the plastic hood or the heavy threaded ring which connects the macro lens to the hood, making it much more compact the shown above.

The plastic hood is incredibly useful, as you can press it against your intended subject to ensure the iPhone’s camera and the subject are the optimal distance apart. This helps you to have at least part of your subject in focus.

The image quality is really good, but there’s a little softening in the corners and along the edges of the frame. It’s not too distracting, especially if you keep your macro subject centrally positioned.

Macro Lens Edition – $69.99

Telephoto Lens

This telephoto lens is another solid, well-built, lens which provides 3x optical zoom when positioned over the iPhone X’s standard lens, either using the case or the clip provided.

The 3x optical zoom is an increase over the iPhone X’s 2x telephoto lens, but even better than that, if you position the lens over the iPhone X’s telephoto lens using the Clip-On attachment, you get a huge 6x optical zoom!

Telephoto Lens Edition – $89.99

5. Amir

At the budget end of the scale, Amir offers a choice of various different lenses and kits. The 3 in 1 lens kit consists of a 0.4x super wide-angle lens, a 180 degree fisheye lens and a 10x macro lens.

To use the fisheye lens make sure you keep it screwed to the macro lens. And then unscrew the pair to make use of the macro lens. At 10x magnification, the macro lens gets you enough close-up detail to be impressive but is also relatively easy to use.

You get a handy cleaning cloth bag and lens covers as part of the kit – perfect for keeping your lenses in pristine dust-free condition.  Choose from black or silver for the lenses themselves.

The Amir lenses attach to your phone using a clip. This is a versatile fitting that is compatible with many models of iPhone, from 5 through to 8. The interchangeability is great for when you upgrade your iPhone as the lenses aren’t model specific. The design also lets you connect any 37mm threaded lens to the clip.

It’s fair to say that such a cheap lens won’t give you professional results, but they’re a lot of fun and can be used to expand your iPhone photography beyond what the iPhone’s native lenses allow.

The Amir 3-in-1 Lens Kit costs under $20.

iPhone Camera Lens: Conclusion

There are clearly plenty of options available to you to further utilize your iPhone for photography. Weigh up what’s most important to you to help you choose a system that’s right for you. A lens kit gives you the most flexibility, but a single, more expensive, dedicated lens will give you a better quality iPhone camera lens to do a specific job.

Remember to also think about what suits you in terms of how the lenses attach to your iPhone. Each lens system offers their own approach. Price is also likely to be a consideration and consequently interchangeability between different iPhone models when you upgrade.

1. iCloud Photo Library

Backup photos and access them easily across your Apple devices.

• Essentially a copy of your current iPhone content
• 5GB storage space for free
• Low cost extra storage space that you can share with family members

No need to visit the app store for this one. It’s already there in your iPhone. iCloud Photo Library is part of Apple’s all-in-one iPhone backup and device syncing facility. Essentially it allows you to backup photos and videos stored on an iPhone, iPad and iMac to a shared iCloud space so that you can then access them across devices. Therefore it’s perfect for people who regularly use the same Apple ID on more than one Apple device.

When a change is made on one device, for example a photo is deleted, this will be reflected in what the iCloud holds. If you are looking for a storage app that allows you to upload your photos to it and delete the same photos from your iPhone in the knowledge that the photo will still be held in the cloud then you should look at downloading one of the other apps we’re discussing here.

However, there is a way to free up some space on your iPhone and make use of iCloud Photo Library as an extra storage option. To do this you will need to select ‘Optimise iPhone Storage’ when activating your iCloud Photo Library via Settings –>Photos.

With this option activated iCloud Photo Library will automatically store the full resolution versions of your photos in the iCloud and replace with a space-saving version on your iPhone. The originals are always available for download when you need them. Click here to learn how to download photos from iCloud to your device.

You’ll only get 5GB for free though so will more than likely need to pay a monthly charge to upgrade to more space if you want to use iCloud Photo Library to its full potential. If you don’t pay and go over your allocated free space uploading of photos will cease. Additional space is cheap with 50GB costing just $0.99 per month. Other plans available are for 200GB or 2TB and it’s worth noting that if you go for one of these two larger plans you will be able to share this space with family members.

You can make use of the iCloud Photo Sharing option to create albums to share with other people and to subscribe to other people’s shared albums. The creation of ‘memories’ videos are a nostalgic nice touch. Enjoy reliving your day or even year by viewing one of these automatically generated photo compilations. And you can use the familiar editing tools offered in Photos on any photo from your iCloud.

2. Flickr

Huge amount of free storage and a social network in itself.

• 1000GB for free to use for photos and videos
• Great editing tools and preset filters
• Follow other photographers and easily share your photos

Storage space is not unlimited, but you will get a massive 1TB or 1000GB of space for free. Use the ‘Auto-Uploadr’ to ensure all your images and videos are backed-up on the app.

To set up the Auto-Uploadr you’ll need to go in via the settings cog icon and then activate the tool – choose to just do this when connected to Wi-Fi to save on monthly data allowances.

Flickr also includes some nice editing tools within the app and a set of preset filters. You’ll also be able to look at the camera information for each photo uploaded to Flickr so you can see the behind the scenes info if you want to.

In using the app you’ll not only get to browse through your own stored images but will get to see a feed recommending other users that you may want to view shared photos from. The feed operates in an Instagram-like way allowing you to like and comment on images. Your images will stay private though unless you choose to share them.

Flickr used to make you create a Yahoo email account to allow you to register but for those of us who don’t want another email address this requirement no longer exists and you can now register with any email address.

3. Snapfish

Unlimited free storage and print options.

• Get 50 free photo prints a month on sign up
• Great range of print items on offer for purchase
• Easily upload images from your camera roll and social media accounts

For a more selective approach to photo storage, the Snapfish app offers some attractive features. You’ll get unlimited free storage at full image resolution but will need to manually select those images that you want to store. This can be done in large batches making it an easy task. You can easily link to your iPhone camera roll, Facebook, Instagram and Google Photos directly from the app to upload photos.

The storage is a sideline to the app’s main business of printing images. Whether as individual prints or compiled into a photobook or in one of the gift forms such as mugs, key rings etc. Once you have your images stored in Snapfish you can then use them in multiple projects. So, there’s no cost for photo storage but if you want to print you’ll need to pay. That said, you are given 50 free prints per month when you sign up.

The app provides handy tools for fine-tuning your photos such as red-eye reduction and basic editing tools ensuring that any chosen prints are optimised.

Unlike some other similar services, Snapfish is not based in a single country and instead has bases in Europe, North America and Asia Pacific. Handy for keeping the delivery charges down.

4. Google Photos

A great all-round iPhone photo storage option.

• Unlimited free storage space for photos and videos
• Create collages, animations and movies from your photos
• Clever visual search that doesn’t require tagging

If you’re looking for unlimited free storage space to backup photos then Google Photos could be for you. However, you are restricted on the maximum resolution of individual images and videos that can be stored. 16 megapixels is the maximum for images but this should be sufficient for most mobile photography. For videos you’ll only be able to store at up to 1080p resolution and up to 15 minutes long.

If you ever need to go bigger than this, you can store at original quality but this will use your Google Drive storage – 15GB for free and then payment options for more. Useful if you want to add in images from other sources at original size to keep everything in a single archive.

It is all very well to be able to upload unlimited images, but unlimited images can soon amount to thousands of images. For the archive to be useable you’ll need to have a way of finding an image. Google Photos has just the feature for this. Visual features and subjects can be searched for within the categories of people, places and things.  No tagging required. So, to find that birthday photo from two years ago, search “cake”!

Have fun creating your own collages, animations and movies by making selections of your favorite images. Or allow Google Photos to surprise you with some that it creates for you. You’ll get a notification in the app when one has been prepared.

Easily share these with friends and family and with the apps compatibility with Google Chromecast you can also enjoy viewing albums on your television.

The app offers some powerful editing tools so you can transform your images. The app will also edit images for you with stylized photos where images are edited by the app. Panoramas, where the app will cleverly stitch together images for you, are also automatically created.

5. Prime Photos from Amazon

A great choice for Amazon Prime customers.

• Unlimited free photo storage for Prime customers
• Family members can also make use of the free storage
• In-app editing tools

All Amazon customers get 5GB of free storage but this increases to unlimited photo storage space if you have an Amazon Prime account. So you should certainly look to make use of the unlimited free storage available to you via the app if you are a premium Amazon user.

The ‘Family Vault’ feature in Amazon Photos allows up to five additional people to contribute photos to your unlimited storage account. A very useful feature to combine photos in a single place within the family.

Photos are backed up automatically by this app. You’ll also be able to tweak your photos with the in-app editing tools allowing you to adjust brightness, color, focus and more as well as applying preset filters.

But do be aware that if you cancel your Amazon Prime membership you’ll lose your unlimited storage benefit. Upon cancellation, if you exceed the 5GB that is free to all, you’ll get the option to switch to a paid storage plan for your photos.

6. Dropbox

A classic storage app for all types of files.

• 2GB of free storage space
• Increase the amount of free storage you have by referring friends
• Easily share albums via app created links

Dropbox is a popular cloud storage provider and is used by individuals and businesses alike.

Dropbox is great if you want to store more than just photos. There are very few restrictions on what you can upload to be stored by Dropbox. The basic free account will give you just 2GB of storage but you can increase the amount of free space you have by:

• Completing the Dropbox “getting started” guide
• Referring your friends, family, and co-workers to Dropbox
• Contributing to the Dropbox Community forum

Paid plans are also offered with the maximum 1TB available on a personal plan. It’s useful to note that if you downgrade a payment plan your files will still be available to you. You just won’t be able to add to them.

Sharing between Dropbox users is easy. But it’s also easy to share folders by sending a link to people who don’t have a Dropbox account. They’ll have the opportunity to create their own Dropbox account or to simply view the contents of the link online without the need to have their own account.

7. Microsoft OneDrive

A good choice if you’re an Office 365 user.

• 5GB of free storage space for all types of files
• Increase the features available by choosing a payment plan
• Automatic uploads of photos

Although a Microsoft product, the app is also available for use with iPhones, iPads and iMacs. OneDrive is mostly going to appeal to you if you use Office 365 enabling seamless integration between your iPhone photos and devices.

With OneDrive Basic you’ll get 5GB of storage space for free. You can upgrade to more space with one of the payment plans on option. More features become available to you as you pay more.

The space is available for the storage of photos, videos, documents and more. Automatic uploading is available. You’ll be able to look at the camera setting information for each photo, organize photos into albums, rename and share them. However, beyond that, there’s no function to edit photos in OneDrive.

8. Ever

High security and fun to use.

• Unlimited photo storage at high resolution
• Touch ID to access the app
• Fun editing tools including stickers and overlays

Ever is a security conscious iPhone photo storage app which backs up your photos. The setup process includes the option to use Touch ID and makes it very easy to connect to social media accounts such as Instagram and Facebook. It even connects easily to other storage accounts such as Google Photos.

Back up takes place when connected to Wi-Fi by default to save using up monthly data allowances. All photos stored in Ever remain private until you wish to share them.

4. Create A Strong Composition

When you spot a scene that you want to photograph, take a moment to think about the best way to compose the picture.

Composition is all about where you position the main elements within the frame. In a rural setting you’re often faced with large expanses of open space, and if you don’t create a strong composition your photo won’t have much impact.

The first thing to consider is whether the scene has a strong focal point that will give your viewer something to focus on. Typical examples of a main subject or focal point would be a tree, a flower, a rock formation, a building or a person.

Next you need to decide where to position the subject within your composition. A good place to start is with the rule of thirds.

Imagine your viewfinder to be divided into nine equal sections, then think about lining up the main elements of your image along these lines or at the places they intersect. Line up the horizon with a horizontal division, or place an object of interest at one of the line intersections.

To help you compose your shots according to the rule of thirds, you may find it helpful to make the grid visible within the iPhone’s native camera app. To do this go to Settings > Photos & Camera > Grid.

Of course, the rule of thirds is just a guideline, and you might find that a central composition will have more impact. But taking the time to think about where you position the subject and horizon is bound to result in a better composition.

Another great tip for composing landscape photos is to use leading lines to draw the viewer’s eye deep into the image.

Leading lines are usually quite easy to find in rural environments, for example, paths across open fields, farm tracks, country lanes, tree lines, and fences.

This is particularly useful for shots of people and animals as you’re forced to take shots with less planning to capture a fleeting moment.

5. Try A Different Perspective

The problem with landscape photography is that your photos can end up looking similar to everyone else’s. For something more unique, think about how you can capture the scene in a different way.

An easy way to create a more interesting photo is to shoot from an unusual angle. Getting down low and shooting from a low angle is a simple solution that can have a big impact on your image.

Don’t be afraid to get yourself into some interesting positions to get a more unique shot. Photographing flowers from low down on the ground will capture the scene from an angle that people don’t usually see.

It’s also the perfect solution for getting a lovely background of plain sky behind your subject.

Another way to show the scene from a different perspective is to use a shallow depth of field, so that the camera only focuses on a small part of the scene, throwing the rest of it out of focus.

6. Photograph Animals In The Landscape

Animals are a big part of rural life – whether it’s wildlife, farm animals or your own four-legged friend accompanying you.

Try making animals the focal point of your image, or use them to add a sense of movement or scale to the scene.

See if you can capture the character of farm animals like sheep and cows. Some are shy and will keep their distance, but others are as curious as you are.

Be sure to take plenty of shots as you go in closer as you never know when they’ll move away!

Be careful how close you get to some animals though. As nice as it is to get a detailed close-up shot, a fence between you and a group of inquisitive and unpredictable animals isn’t always a bad thing!

The end result needn’t betray your line of safety. If in doubt, keep your distance and capture them as part of the wider landscape.

For a bit of creativity, look out for ways that you could capture animals in a slightly more abstract way, such as the hair caught in barbed wire in the photo below.

7. Include People In Your Shots

Another fun option is to use a person as the main subject in your rural landscape photos. A person adds a strong focal point, as well as a wonderful storytelling element.

While you might get lucky and capture a stranger wandering through the scene, a better option is to take a friend or family member along with you.

Try experimenting with different kinds of shot to create different stories in your photos.

For example, do you want to shoot a posed portrait or capture a natural candid shot where the subject is unaware that you’re photographing them?

Do you want to shoot a close-up portrait of the subject’s face with the landscape in the background, or would it have more impact if you photographed a lone figure in the distance?

Do you want to show the subject’s face so that the viewer can see who they are, or would you rather create an air of mystery by photographing them from behind?

Watch your subject, or subjects, as they move through the landscape. Look for interactions or interesting moments that would make a great photo, then snap away using burst mode to ensure you have plenty of shots to choose from.

As well as taking photos of people with a beautiful landscape behind them, don’t forget to make use of the ground as a backdrop.

A thick layer of autumn leaves or a meadow full of flowers will make a gorgeous backdrop for a creative outdoor portrait.

8. Look For Small Details

Enjoying the great open spaces of the rural environment is one of its biggest appeals, but don’t forget to stop and appreciate the smaller details too.

There are so many small objects out in nature that make incredible photography subjects. Try getting up close to flowers, leaves and crops to capture their unique detail.

1. Back Up Photos To Hard Drive

First and foremost, I would recommend creating an electronic backup of your images that you can keep in your possession. If you have a large hard drive on your home computer, this is a simple option.

You can transfer photos from iPhone to PC by connecting your iPhone with the USB charging cable. You could also transfer them wirelessly using a photo transfer app for iPhone.

If you have a Mac computer running OS X Lion (10.7) or higher, you can also use the AirDrop feature to download photos from iPhone to Mac.

While viewing the image thumbnails in the Photos app on your phone, tap Select, then select the images you want to transfer. Now tap the share icon (up-arrow) at the bottom left of the screen.

On the next screen, tap the AirDrop option and select the name of the device you want to transfer them to. You’ll see a notification on your Mac screen, and the images will be transferred to your Downloads folder.

If you have a lot of photos, they’re likely to start filling up the storage space on your computer. Therefore, an external hard drive might be a better option.

There’s a huge range of external hard drives available, and you can get a lot of storage space for your money. 

When choosing an external hard drive, consider comparing them based on the following features: storage capacity, speed, robustness, appearance, Wi-Fi capability, ease of use, price and security.

Wireless devices such as the WD 2TB My Passport Wireless make a great companion for your iPhone, allowing you to back up and access images when you’re out and about.

You could also consider using a USB flash drive such as this Samsung 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive.

While these don’t have as much storage capacity as external hard drives, they’re a great option if you want something more compact.

DVDs could also be used. These are very cost effective and can be clearly labelled to indicate their contents.

You’re unlikely to be able to store your entire photo collection on a DVD, but they’re great for backing up images from a particular event such as a wedding, party, holiday etc. They can also be easily shared with family and friends.

Once you’ve transferred your images from your phone and they’re safely stored on your choice of hard drive, you can delete the images from your iPhone to free up space if you want.

2. Back Up Images To Cloud Storage

While hard drives allow you to keep your images in your physical possession, cloud storage lets you store your images remotely via the internet.

Backing up your photos to cloud storage means that you don’t need to worry about your backup being lost or damaged, as can happen with hard drives.

You also don’t have to go through the process of manually transferring your photos. You can simply set up your images to automatically back up to the cloud via Wi-Fi.

There are lots of different cloud storage providers, so let’s take a look at some of the most popular options.

Flickr is a great cloud storage and photo sharing app which allows you to store a large number of photos at their original size and quality.

If you activate the Auto-Uploadr feature, all your photos and videos will automatically back up to your Flickr camera roll. They’ll be private, unless you choose to share them.

Flickr gives you a huge 1TB (1000GB) of storage space for for free. You’ll need to take a lot of photos to exceed this limit! And if you ever need more than 1TB, you can always open a second account.

While the storage space is free, you can pay a subscription fee if you want extra photo statistic functions and advert-free browsing.

The only requirement for using Flickr is that you’ll need a Yahoo email address (free to sign up to via yahoo.com).

An alternative option is the Google Photos cloud storage app which lets you back up unlimited images in high quality for free.

This app allows to edit your photos, and you can easily search your images with no tagging required.

There’s also a handy setting that lets you free up space quickly on your iPhone when needed. Just go to Settings within the app and tap Free Up Space. This removes images from your device that are safely backed up in Google Photos.

Google Photos will also regularly create and send you montage movies of images that you’ve uploaded. These are great ways to relive those memories.

Please note that the “high quality” image backup doesn’t necessarily mean “original quality” as Google Photos stores compressed versions of your images. However, they state that there’s minimal effect on image quality.

If you want to make sure your images are backed up at original quality, Google also offers Google Drive. With this you’ll get 15GB of free cloud storage, and you can purchase a storage plan if you need additional space.

There are many other cloud storage options that give you a set amount of space for free and the option to purchase additional space if needed.

Dropbox gives you 2GB for free, but you can increase your free storage to 16GB by completing tutorials and referring friends to the service.

Apple’s iCloud Photo Library gives you 5GB for free and the option to purchase additional storage space as you need it.

To turn on this feature on your iPhone, go to Settings > iCloud > Photos, then switch on iCloud Photo Library.

Any images in your photo library will now automatically back up to iCloud whenever you have a Wi-Fi connection. If you enable this feature on other iOS devices such as an iPad, the images will be synced to these devices too.

If you have a Mac computer, you’ll also be able to access your iCloud photos via the Photos app on the Mac.

With iCloud Photo Library, keep in mind that if you delete images from any iCloud device, they’ll also be deleted from the cloud. So this is more of a syncing option than a true backup option.

iCloud also offers iCloud Photo Sharing. This allows you to easily share photos with friends and family.

Other cloud storage options worth considering include Amazon Cloud Drive (5GB free, but unlimited if you’re an Amazon Prime customer) and Box (10GB free).

If you choose a cloud storage option that also offers photo sharing, make sure you carefully check the settings to ensure appropriate privacy options are selected.

For your peace of mind, I would recommend backing up your photos to both cloud storage and physical hard drives.

3. Print Your iPhone Photos

In addition to backing up your entire photo collection to cloud and hard drive storage, you might also want to consider printing your favorite images.

This is a great way of creating physical copies of your photos that you can put in albums, hang on your wall, share with family and friends, and even sell to the public.

Creating a traditional photo album is a wonderful treasure that can be enjoyed for many years to come by yourself and future generations. It’s also a lot of fun to put together.

You could print your images on your home printer or a portable iPhone photo printer.

Or you could use an iPhone photo printing app to order prints directly from your phone. Keep an eye out for promotional codes allowing for very cost effective printing of images.

When you’ve got your prints, enjoy arranging your images in a meaningful way in a photo album. You may want to add some text or make a note of the date on the back of each image.

Many online printing services also offer the option to create beautiful bound photo books.

Printastic and Pop Box are two of the many apps that let you upload your images and then build your photo book by personalizing the layout, adding text and choosing a cover.

Photo books are a great way to create a backup of a special occasion. Try making a photo book for a wedding, holiday or birthday celebration. Keep a copy for yourself or give them as gifts to family and friends.

If you’re looking for personalized gift ideas that feature your images, there are many different apps offering products such as mugs, mouse mats, jigsaw puzzles and clothing.

Printing your images on notecards is also a great way to preserve and pass on your photos for others to enjoy.

Or how about getting your images printed on a huge canvas? You can print large canvases from your iPhone photos without losing quality.

When printing canvases, remember that the image will be wrapped around a frame, so a couple of centimeters of the forward facing part of the image is often lost.

Printing a number of complimentary images to canvases and displaying them together is a great way to fill a bare wall.

Of course, if you’re printing your photos on canvases, note cards or other products, you might want to consider selling your prints to make some money from your work.

When you’re new to Instagram, it’s tempting to post lots of images to fill up your photo feed, even if they’re not that great.

However, you should always apply a strict quality control rule to ensure you only post your very best photos.

It’s much better to have fewer high quality photos that to have lots of mediocre images on your Instagram account.

Only post high quality, sharp images that have a clear and meaningful subject, great lighting and strong composition.

People will follow you based on the quality of your photos, so be strict with yourself and only post your very best work.

2. Keep Your Photo Feed Consistent

If you browse through Instagram, you’ll quickly see that the accounts that have the largest followings are consistent in the types of images they feature.

They’re likely to be the accounts you’ll be drawn to as you identify with a particular style or genre.

Gaining a following for your own account is very encouraging, and you’re more likely to attract people who will like and comment on your images if they can identify with the photos that you post.

To maximize your following and attract like-minded individuals, decide on a style for your Instagram account and stick to it.

Maybe you’ll only post landscape photos, portrait photos, or street photography. Or perhaps you prefer still life photography.

Or maybe you’ll post different kinds of images, but all edited with similar effects to create a certain consistent look and feel.

If you have interests in more than one type of photography or style of editing, then why not open more than one Instagram account?

3. Change The Mood With Instagram Filters

One way of creating an Instagram account with a consistent appearance is to make use of the built-in Instagram filters that you can apply to an image before you post it.

Instagram is one of the best photo filter apps for iPhone. Sticking to your favorite filters can dramatically change the mood of images and will ensure you maintain consistency in your gallery.

When you’ve selected an image to post to your Instagram account, tap Next in the top right corner to take you to a range of filters that you can browse through and apply to change the look of your image.

The images below make use of the X-Pro II, Nashville and Willow filters respectively.

A single tap of a filter applies the filter at 100% strength. Tapping the filter a second time brings up a slider which lets you reduce the filter strength for a more subtle effect.

Always be careful that you don’t apply filters at too high a strength. The filter should enhance the photo, rather than over overpower it.

4. Fine Tune Images With Instagram Editing Tools

Instagram also allows you to fine tune your images using a selection of manual adjustment tools. Tap the wrench icon to access the list of editing tools.

These tools allow you to adjust things like exposure, color and sharpness, as well as rotation, vignette and blur. You can use these tools on their own, or before or after applying a filter.

You may also want to try out the Lux tool which acts as an all-in-one autocorrect feature. Tap the sun icon to the left of the wrench icon beneath your photo, then use the Lux tool slider to reduce or increase the autocorrect effect.

5. Use Hashtags

Tagging your images using hashtags helps make them more discoverable. It’s kind of like an indexing system for the millions of images on Instagram.

Simply use the # symbol followed by a word or phrase of your choice, and post this in the image caption or comments.

The choice of hashtag should describe the image. Descriptive hashtags for the above photo could include #trees, #forest, #mist, #fog, #mysterious and #worcestershire.

These hashtags will have been used thousands of times and will place your image with a collection of other images on each of these themes. Anyone browsing these tags will then see your photo.

Instagram restricts you to using a maximum of 30 hashtags per image, however, there’s no need to use that many.

Often it’s adequate just to add a handful of the most relevant hashtags to your photo. Having too many hashtags can make your photo description very long and difficult to read.

And finally, why not have fun creating your own hashtags? There’s no rule to say that you have to use existing tags – and who knows, you might start a new trend!

6. Use Location Tagging

When preparing to share an image on Instagram, you can add the location of where the image was taken. Simply tap the Add Location option before sharing, and search for the relevant place.

Just like hashtags, your image will then appear with other images taken at the same location when a search is done on “Place.”

When you’re browsing Instagram, try exploring “Places” tags for inspiration on shots to take at a particular location. You’ll often get great ideas for places to explore and the best viewpoints to shoot from.

7. Tag People

To draw someone’s attention to a post, you can make use of the @ symbol followed by the person’s username that you want to mention.

For example, my Instagram name is bodneyboo, so if you wanted to mention me in a comment or tag me in a photo, you’d need to type @bodneyboo.

You can mention a person in a photo caption or a comment. They’ll then see that they’ve been mentioned in connection with a post.

When replying to comments on your photos, always use the person’s username preceded by the @ symbol so that they’re notified that you’ve replied to their comment.

You can also make use of this feature to tag people who appear in your shots. When posting an image to Instagram, you can tag people at the same time as adding a location.

8. Follow Themed Hubs

Instagram has a thriving hub community. Hubs are pages that feature images from a variety of artists on a particular theme.

With thousands of hubs out there you’re pretty much guaranteed to find some that interest you.

Hubs do a wonderful job of showcasing the best images, helping you to discover Instagram users that you want to see more of.
